Ostrów Tumski ("Cathedral Island", German : Dominsel ) is the oldest part of the city of Wrocław in south-western Poland . It was formerly an island ( ostrów in old Polish) between branches of the Oder River . Archaeological excavations have shown that the western part of Ostrów Tumski, between the Church of St. Martin and the Holy Cross, was the first to be inhabited. The first, wooden church (St. Martin), dating from the 9th century, was surrounded by defensive walls built on the banks of the river. The island had approximately 1,500 inhabitants at that time. The first constructions on Ostrów Tumski were built in the 10th century by the Piast dynasty, and were made from wood. The first building from solid material was St. Martin's chapel, built probably at the beginning of the eleventh century by Benedictine monks. Wrocław’s dwarfs (polish: krasnale, krasnoludki) - are small figurines that first appeared in the streets of Wrocław in 2001. Since then, their numbers have been continually growing, and today they are considered a tourist attraction: those who would like to combine sight-seeing in Wrocław with dwarf-tracking are offered special brochures with map [1] and mobile application software on the smartphone . [2] Currently (2013) there are over 250 dwarfs spread all over the city. Six of them are located outside the city at the LG plant in Biskupice Podgórne . History In 2001, to commemorate the Orange Alternative movement, a figurine of a dwarf (the movement’s symbol) was officially placed on Świdnicka Street, where the group’s happenings used to take place. It is probably one of the few cases in the world where such a subversive group has been honoured by the city authorities, who commissioned the placing of a statue of a dwarf in the city centre. From Gorlitz we drove to Wroclaw. Were there many years back, but only saw the train station at night.
