The first time in my life I rode the Metro, from Montmartre to the main boulevards, the noise was horrible. Otherwise it hasn't been bad, even intensifies the calm, pleasant sense of speed. Metro system does away with speech; you don't have to speak either when you pay or when you get in and out. Because it is so easy to understand, the Metro is a frail and hopeful stranger's best chance to think that he has quickly and correctly, at the first attempt, penetrated the essence of Paris.
