A gift from Italy (I read). Used to be the biggest -- in LA, US, or world? I was exiting the city (wanted to get a feel for where the Bradbury is) -- going south on Broadway. Passed some scary stuff: trash, graffiti, tent villages. Then this came into view. *         



Ligier Richier (c. 1500–1567) was a French sculptor active in Saint-Mihiel . Richier primarily worked in the churches of his native Saint-Mihiel and from 1530 he enjoyed the protection of Duke Antoine of Lorraine, for whom he did important work. Whilst Richier did sometimes work in wood, he preferred the pale, soft limestone with its fine grain, and few veins, extracted at Saint Mihiel and Sorcy and when working in this medium he experimented with refined polishing techniques, with which he was able to give the stone a marble-like appearance. [1] One of his finest works is the "Groupe de la Passion", consisting of 13 life-size figures made in the local stone of the Meuse region. It can be found in the Church of St. Étienne. [2] It is also known as the "Pâmoison de la Vierge" ( Swoon of the Virgin , the Virgin fainting, supported by St John). Charles Ray (born 1953) is a Los Angeles -based American sculptor . He is known for his strange and enigmatic sculptures that draw the viewer’s perceptual judgments into question in jarring and unexpected ways. Christopher Knight in the Los Angeles Times wrote that Ray’s “career as an artist…is easily among the most important of the last twenty years." Early Life and Education Charles Ray was born in Chicago as the son of Helen and Wade Ray. He has four brothers and a sister. He earned his BFA at the University of Iowa and his MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University .   He studied sculpture at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History with Roland Brener , who exposed Ray to many of developments of Modernist sculpture, in particular the constructivist aesthetic of artists like Anthony Caro and David Smith .
