Sebald's Grünewald: Let's See How Long This Takes...

Sebald's After Nature. The whole: a poem, perhaps (though it reads very much like his prose). Part One: ... As the Snow on the Alps: Ekphrastic, to some degree. But whatever the truth, I thought it'd be fun to sketch some of the tidbits re the elusive Matthias Grunewald, as they appear in part one of Sebald's tripartite work. My work (this) is a scrivener's work in progress. I think it will be best to deliver it in multiple (hopefully uninterrupted) posts.

Lindenhardt altar

The Lindenhardt altar is a late Gothic winged altar. It is located in the old fortified church Lindenhardt and holds a painting by Mathias Grünewald from 1503, which shows Christ and 14 helpers. The statues come from Michael Wolgemut . The altar was originally in the church of Bindlach .  After a new altar had been made for this church, the Green Forest Altar in the 17th century the parish was Lindenhardt left. The Lindenhardt altar had been destroyed by fire.

Painting Origin

Italo Bacigalupo, retired pastor, 1972-1981 Parish Priest in Lindenhardt, claims to have demonstrated in a comprehensive thesis that the images in the Michael Church does not come from Grünewald, but have been painted by Hans Suess von Kulmbach. This is disputed violently from City Hall and the parish.
